The collection consists of one 90-minute audio cassette tape recording of a celebration entitled, "Scripps Institution of Oceanography Honors Professor Fred N. Spiess for Forty Years of Excellence as a Scientist and Leader," which was held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at 2:30 p.m. on August 28, 1992 in front of the George H. Scripps Memorial Marine Biological Building. Victor Anderson served as master of ceremonies. Speakers included UCSD Chancellor Richard Atkinson, George Shor who spoke on "Physics to Geophysics," Fred Fisher who presented a talk entitled, "Little Pond to Big Pond, " Mike Loughridge who spoke on "Students at Sea, " Tony Boegeman who spoke on "Pictures from the Past, " and Old Scripps Building Architect John Henderson, whose address was entitled, "S.O.S."
